My Daily Grind: Coffee, My Cat, and the Start of Our Day

Every morning in our household essentially begins the same way: I prepare my coffee, don my worn baseball cap, and invariably, Milo the cat appears, trotting over as if he’s reporting for his shift. Before I even take my first sip, he has already climbed up and positioned himself directly on top of my head, treating it like his personal penthouse. No exaggeration—hat, coffee, cat. That is the established routine.

I’ll be seated there, attempting to awaken and function as an adult, with this small mass of fur kneading my scalp. Meanwhile, Milo is simply getting comfortable, purring loudly enough to obscure the weather forecast. It’s honestly amusing—everyone else in the house is rushing around searching for keys, packing lunches, striving to depart, and here I am holding court with a feline perched on my head and a coffee mug in my hand.

Without fail, someone will inevitably remark, “Alright, Dad’s getting caffeinated, Milo’s about to drift off.” And it’s accurate—by the time my coffee is half-consumed, Milo is already nodding off, utilizing my hat as a cushion. I then proceed to work, or run errands, or whatever the day entails. And Milo? He merely slides right off my hat, stretches, and immediately returns to bed as if his early shift exhausted him.

Every morning, it’s the same delightful disarray. And while it might appear to be just a comical little habit, I have grown to cherish these moments. They are simple, inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but they constitute the minor details that keep me grounded. There is something tranquil about commencing the day with a cup of coffee and the gentle weight of Milo on my head. It’s one of those small, absurd facets of life that makes everything feel acceptable.

But, as with most routines, life possesses a knack for introducing something unforeseen into the equation. And that is precisely what occurred one Tuesday morning. It commenced identically to any other day—coffee, Milo, the usual family commotion of preparing for the day—but then, I heard the distinct sound of my phone buzzing from the kitchen counter. Normally, I wouldn’t have given it much thought. But something about that particular moment felt different, like an intuitive sense that compelled me to check it.

I slowly placed my coffee mug down, taking care not to disturb Milo, who had already settled in for a nap. I walked over and retrieved my phone. The message was from my friend Derek, someone I hadn’t communicated with in quite some time.

“Hey man, I’ve got a job opportunity for you. Give me a call when you get the chance.”

I stared at the message for a moment, bewildered. Derek wasn’t the type of individual who typically sent casual texts of that nature. He was a laid-back person, never one to be overly insistent about work. I had a few minutes before the morning rush truly commenced, so I returned his call.

“Hey, what’s up?” I inquired, attempting to sound casual but already sensing that something significant was approaching.

“Glad you called,” Derek responded, his voice more serious than usual. “Listen, I know things have been challenging for you lately with your employment situation. I’ve been speaking with a contact in my professional network, and he’s seeking someone to manage a new project. It’s a respectable opportunity, with potential for advancement.”

I was intrigued. “What kind of project?”

“It’s a tech startup,” Derek continued, “and they’re just commencing operations. They require someone with expertise in logistics and management, someone who can assist in establishing the backend functions. The remuneration is substantial, and there’s a possibility of earning considerable income in the future. I immediately thought of you.”

I paused, attempting to process all the information. A tech startup? I wasn’t certain I possessed the qualifications, but it sounded like something I could adapt to. My current employment wasn’t exactly my ideal, and circumstances had been feeling somewhat stagnant recently. Perhaps this was the chance I had been anticipating.

“Sounds interesting,” I said. “What’s the catch?”

“No catch, man,” Derek assured me. “I simply wanted to reach out because I believe you would be a suitable fit. You can determine your own hours, but the team is seeking someone to begin promptly. I understand it’s a significant step, but this could be a beneficial move for you. If you’d like, I’ll send over the detailed information, and you can contemplate it.”

I thanked Derek, stated I would review the information, and ended the call. I stood there for a moment, holding my phone, uncertain of what to consider. A job in technology? That was about as far removed from my customary routine as possible. But the truth was, I’d been experiencing a sense of unease. My work no longer stimulated me, and I was seeking a change. Perhaps this was it.

After breakfast, I dedicated the next few hours to thoroughly examining the details Derek had sent. The more I read, the more I realized this could genuinely be an excellent match. The company appeared to be in the nascent stages of something substantial, and they required an individual who could manage the logistical aspects of launching operations. It was a bit of a stretch for me, but it felt like a challenge I could embrace.

I discussed it with my wife, Sarah, that evening. She was initially uncertain. She understood how much I had been enjoying my current occupation, even if it wasn’t the most exhilarating work. She also recognized how highly I valued stability, and transitioning careers—especially to something that felt so unexpected—was a momentous decision.

“You’ve been feeling stagnant for a while,” she remarked after a long silence. “Perhaps this is a worthwhile opportunity to step beyond your comfort zone. You won’t know until you attempt it.”

I hadn’t expected her to be so encouraging. I thought she would be more cautious, but hearing her express that made me feel somewhat more confident about taking the plunge.

The following morning, I placed the call to Derek, and by the end of the day, I was officially engaged with the startup. My first day was scheduled for the subsequent week.

The initial few months were a blur. It was not an effortless transition. I had a great deal to learn, particularly concerning technology and the fast-paced environment of a startup. There were days when I felt completely out of my element, but I continued to push myself. I reasoned that if I could navigate the daily chaos of family life, I could manage this.

Things began to align. I grew more at ease with the team, and my self-assurance in the work I was performing increased. Gradually, I started to perceive the broader context and how my role contributed to the overall success of the company. It was no longer merely a job—it was an opportunity to construct something meaningful.

But just as circumstances were looking promising, an unexpected development arose.

One evening, after a particularly demanding day at the office, I returned home to discover an email from Derek. It was somewhat late for him to be reaching out, and I was curious as to his reason for sending me something after hours.

The subject line read: “Urgent: A Change in Plans.”

Within the email, Derek explained that there had been some internal complications at the startup, and the project I had been engaged with was being discontinued. They were undergoing a reorganization, and regrettably, my position was no longer required. He offered profuse apologies but assured me that he would assist me in securing another role within his network.

It felt like a severe blow. I had just begun to acclimate to this new chapter of my life, and now it was over. I could not fathom how swiftly things had deteriorated.

But then something truly extraordinary transpired.

The following morning, after I had processed the initial shock, I decided to contact the company myself. I reasoned it wouldn’t hurt to make a direct appeal. The worst outcome would be a refusal. But to my astonishment, they did not decline. They stated they had a new project in development, one that had not yet been publicly announced, and they believed I would be an excellent fit for it.

That new project proved to be a tremendous opportunity. It was a colossal undertaking that involved expanding their operations internationally. They desired me to help lead that endeavor, and the compensation was even more favorable than what I had initially agreed to.

Ultimately, I absorbed an important lesson: sometimes, when things appear to disintegrate, it is actually the universe creating space for something superior. The initial setback with the startup transformed into a far more significant opportunity, and the work I had been consistently performing positioned me perfectly for it.

It was not the most straightforward path, but it was the one that ultimately yielded greater success than I could have ever envisioned.

And as for Milo, well, he remains my small companion during coffee time, ensuring I don’t become too serious or lose sight of life’s simple joys.

Life possesses a peculiar way of unfolding, even when we cannot perceive the complete picture. If you are contending with a reversal, do not surrender. Continue moving forward. The most favorable outcomes are often awaiting just beyond the bend.

If you have ever confronted a challenge that ultimately proved to be a hidden blessing, please share your experience below. And remember, sometimes the universe simply needs to step back to prepare you for something grander.
