Last month, the dedicated rescuers from Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) successfully captured two dogs that were spotted darting across the bustling streets of Oklahoma City.
While it is not unusual for SAW’s compassionate welfare workers to rescue multiple dogs simultaneously, they are accustomed to witnessing rescued bonded street dogs gradually become self-reliant. However, in this particular case, the staff immediately noticed that these two dogs shared an extraordinary connection.
“They traveled who knows how far,” remarked Ashlie Jerkes, an animal care worker at SAW, “but they always remained by each other’s side.”
The team warmly welcomed the pair and affectionately named them Bonnie and Clyde. Even within the safety of the shelter, the two refused to be separated.
“They spent their stray hold period in the same kennel, where they appeared to be incredibly close,” Jerkes shared.
For three days, Bonnie and Clyde rested together, recovering and receiving necessary medical treatment. Although they were battling heartworm, the duo eventually healed sufficiently to be deemed ready for adoption.
When they were briefly separated on the adoption floor, the two inseparable friends were overjoyed to reunite.
“During their outdoor time, they would simply run and play together,” Jerkes explained.
However, Bonnie soon found herself alone at the shelter after Clyde was adopted by a loving family. Heartbroken and missing her closest companion, Bonnie began to lose hope that her own happy ending would ever come.
In an effort to help her find a forever home, a welfare worker snapped a photo of Bonnie lying dejectedly on her cot and shared it on the shelter’s social media page.
“Bonnie is all alone now that her brother has been adopted,” the post read. “She truly misses having a sibling to cuddle with.”
Thankfully, the shelter’s goal was achieved sooner than expected.
“The post went up on Friday, and by Monday morning, someone came in to adopt her,” Jerkes revealed.
Bonnie has finally found her perfect home and is thriving in her new environment.
“She’s already settling in beautifully!” wrote Brayden Routh, Bonnie’s new owner, in a Facebook comment. “She’s going to have an amazing life, full of adventures with her blue heeler-mix big sister.”
Although Bonnie’s adoption took place just a few days ago, her new family has embraced her as if she had always been a part of their lives.
While Bonnie will always cherish the memories of her brother Clyde, she is now eagerly looking forward to the exciting adventures that await her in her new chapter.
