Abandonment is a harsh reality for many, but for Stu, it was compounded by neglect from those he once considered family. Left in conditions that forced him to rest amidst his own waste, the duration of his suffering remains unknown.
Battling against the ravages of starvation and thirst, Stu’s fight for life was nothing short of heroic.
Battle Against Odds
For an adult St. Bernard, a weight range of 120 to 180 pounds is considered healthy. However, Stu’s weight was a mere fraction of this ideal.
At a critical 43 pounds, Stu’s condition was alarming. The rescue team encountered him in a heartbreaking state—drenched in urine, with his body wasted away to the bone, parched, and lacking the strength to even raise his head.
Upon his arrival, the team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis immediately tended to Stu with a gentle bath, warming him, hydrating him with fluids, and providing a modest portion of food to meet his desperate need for sustenance. The uncertainty of that initial evening loomed large, as his survival hung in the balance.
The results of his blood tests were erratic, leaving the team with little to do but hold onto hope and prayers through the night.
That initial meal at the shelter was more than just nourishment; it may have been his first in an unfathomably long stretch.

Departure from the Shelter Day by day
Stu demonstrated steady progress, yet the path to complete healing was extensive.
In spite of the adversities he faced, his kindness never wavered. His tender nature endeared him to the entire shelter team and volunteers, as well as to a global community of supporters.
The overwhelming wave of affection and support for Stu from countless individuals empowered the rescue team to quickly find him a wonderful foster home.
After a brief stay at the clinic, Stu was ready to depart and proceed with his recuperation in a tranquil home environment, where he could enjoy some rest and leisurely walks.
“The family that welcomed him has a long history with St. Bernards and is eager to assist in his weight gain. He’s been taken in by the mother of our receptionist, keeping him within our extended family. We’ll keep everyone updated on his progress as he embarks on his road to recovery! He’s scheduled for bi-weekly check-ups,” shared the St. Louis rescue team.
Since his arrival at the foster home, Stu has put on an impressive 20 pounds! Although his stomach is still a bit sensitive, his condition is much improved, and he’s eating heartily.
He’s also developed a fondness for tennis balls. When he’s not indulging in a well-deserved nap or taking it easy, you’re likely to find him contentedly chewing on his new favorite toy, which is truly wonderful to see.
The most recent news is very encouraging: Stu’s condition has significantly improved. He’s still experiencing some digestive discomfort and enjoys his frequent naps, yet there’s a noticeable uptick in his vitality.
“He’s an absolute sweetheart. Should you pause in petting him, he’ll gently nibble to remind you he’s there for more affection. He’s living the life of luxury, convinced he’s a small lapdog! For the moment, Stu, that’s perfectly fine, but once you’re back to your ideal weight, be careful not to squash anyone,” shared the rescue team.
