It’s truly a soul-stirring sight to witness dogs being returned to the shelter post-adoption, their forlorn expressions enough to stir deep emotions.
Such events are not uncommon, and sadly, the canine protagonist of our narrative has experienced this as well.
Lola, a young pup, found herself back in the shelter not just once, but twice, all before she reached her first birthday.
Driven by this, Lola resolved to leave an indelible mark on the next family that would take her in. And indeed, she succeeded.
Third Time’s The Charm
While browsing a pet adoption site, the striking image of Lola, with her distinctive black and white markings, captured Cristina Antonucci’s attention.
Reminiscent of a beloved English Bull Terrier mix from her youth, Cristina felt compelled to meet Lola in the flesh.
“Her eyes conveyed so much emotion in that photograph, it was clear she belonged with me. Upon arrival with her foster mother, Lola immediately nestled at my feet, gazing up with such affection,” shared Cristina with The Dodo.
Lola’s journey had been a turbulent one, with her initial adoption by a young individual who bestowed upon her the name Gucci Rose, only to later return her to the shelter. A similar fate befell her second adoption, as the new owner lacked the experience to cater to Lola’s needs.
Learning of Lola’s past, Cristina’s resolve solidified. She was ready to welcome Lola into her life and provide the forever home she had always deserved.
Upon arriving at her new abode, Lola wasted no time in expressing her gratitude to Cristina for the kindness she had been shown.
“That very first evening, she clung to me, embracing me for hours. It was astonishing how swiftly she took to me, considering our brief acquaintance during the car ride. Her actions spoke volumes of her thankfulness, reinforcing my commitment not to disappoint her,” Cristina recounted.
New Beginnings
Regrettably, Lola’s previous ordeals had an impact on her behavior, leading to some mischief she wasn’t meant to engage in.
Her new family, however, empathized with her past and showed immense patience right from the outset.
“Dealing with her digging escapades in the garden and her attempts to breach the fence to frolic with the dog next door was challenging. It was a true test of our patience, but we were aware that if we didn’t show forbearance, perhaps nobody else would,” they explained.
Throughout the difficulties, Christina remained thankful for Lola, who became a source of important life lessons.
“Lola has been a testament to the virtues of patience and determination. The challenges remind you that giving up isn’t an option, and imperfection is part of life,” Christina reflected.
Fortuitously, Lola’s penchant for digging was short-lived as she assumed a new role as the backyard’s vigilant possum guard.
A delightful addition to her life that encouraged this transformation was the arrival of her new little brother, Lenny.
Lola’s joy was boundless as she embraced her role as a doting big sister to the adorable new addition to the family.
“Their bond is incredible; they’re inseparable and spend their days in endless play. It’s been just over six weeks, yet their affection for each other is palpable. They even share a bed,” Christina shared with warmth.
The knowledge that she has provided Lola with a loving, secure home fills Christina with immense satisfaction.
The initial challenges they faced only serve to sweeten the present joy.
“Returning home to spend time with her is the best part of my day. She occupies an irreplaceable place in my heart,” Christina expressed with fondness.
